(More customer reviews)Run fast.I ordered this product on August 24...It finally arrived in September.It looked beautiful.Set it all up and it just doesn't work worth a darn.Called the company.10 days later they responded.They told me to cut tomatoes with a mandolin, to use an external thermometer to monitor the temperature outside. Look very carefully at the controls and you will see the marks between 90 and 165 are not numbered.How can you set it for a temperature if you don't know where it is?The manufacturer insists that the veges need to be continually monitored with an external thermometer. I got two kinds of tomatoes out of this machine.The ones cut with the mandolin were impossible to remove from the trays.The ones sliced by hand were gummy.After 3 days of trying to get the tomatoes right, I gave up and tried to send it back.I waited 2 weeks for an RMA.Here it is Oct 22 and I'm still waiting for a credit.Yes I shipped the thing back.After 20 years of dehydrating with a cheap crummy machine, that worked beautifully, I am very, very, very disappointed with this modern machine. Heck with my old machine, I would throw in hand cut tomatoes at night, set it at 125 degrees and wake up in the morning and load it again.Last year I dried 400 lbs of tomatoes.This year zip.So run away...far away from this product.

(More customer reviews)This dehydrator dries material by moving warm air horizontally over the holding trays. There is a control that allows the temperature to be varied with settings for various materials. A fan moves the warm air. We do not have a timer because we prefer to dehydrate by feel.
This is a good design because the works cannot be contaminated by dripping or food particles, and large items can be dehydrated by removing one or more trays to give overhead room. The material usually dries sufficiently overnight (oriental persimmon halves). Our tree produces loads of this great fruit, and the dehydrator gives us dried fruit for easy preservation.I hightly recommend this product so far (one month of use). We put the unit out on the porch or in the garage to keep the fan noise low.

(More customer reviews)I grow, literally, 50 or so different varieties of herbs of all sorts, from the common place to the exotic.Drying them was always a process, and I always seemed to lose them to mold, mildew, or those that I kept were brown and unattractive looking.Then, as a gift, my husband bought me this dehydrator because he was told it'd dry herbs.

This little gadget has turned into just about the most important gadget I have in my kitchen.It's practically in-use everyday from May to November, dehydrating everything from my precious herbs, to apples, tomatoes, jerky, and all manner of fruit and flower.This dehydrator has literally saved me hundreds of dollars, not only because I can make my own jerky, fruit roll-ups, and dried fruits for everything from trail mix to healthy snacks, but because vegetables from the garden that were left to rot because we couldn't otherwise keep them (and there wasn't enough to can) are now being saved, and every last one of my herbs, even some which didn't take to being dried the "traditional way," are easily preserved.I can even buy in-season fruits and veggies in bulk and dehydrate them, saving me even more money!

This gadget dries everything very quickly and efficiently, so everything really retains its color.I've found myself drying everything from rose petals to bee balm flowers (and all sorts of other flowers that couldn't previously be dried) for use in sachets, potpourri, and carpet deodorizers.My red and purple rose petals stay red and purple, and my herbs keep their emerald-green color, something I'd never keep with conventional drying.I'm really impressed that a dehydrator that is gentle enough to dry herbs is also rugged enough to make jerky and apple chips.Unlike other dehydrators I've seen, this particular one allows you to custom set the temperatures, ensuring that whatever you dry is dried at the temperature most conducive to effective and attractive drying.There's been more than once where I dry a batch of herbs, then after a quick scrubbing, my husband sets it up to dry jerky, which is just awesome.The little booklet full of recipes and drying times that accompanies this dehydrator ensures that even if you've never seen a dehydrator before, you can still use this one almost right out of the box.

Our dehydrator comes with a fruit-rollup attachment, which I'll admit we only have used once, but it appeared to work very well.I will also admit we saved a few dollars by buying some door screen from a hardware store, and cutting it to the size of our dehydrator racks, saving quite a bit of money on the "Clean-A-Screen" which is offered as an optional attachment.It's also nice that this dehydrator is quieter than your average stove fan or air conditioner, so it's not loud at all.If the TV is on, I can't even hear it.My only real complaint with this dehydrator is that it doesn't have an "on/off" switch, so to turn it on and off, you have to plug and unplug it.For people who don't have a lot of power outlets our outlets that are hard to reach, I'd imagine this is a hassle.

I have to say, this tool is a must-have for any cook or gardener.I know my culinary ambitions have always stretched beyond my wallet, but with this I can make my own "sun dried tomatoes" and keep my own exotic herbs, saving not only a chunk of change and using everything in my garden, but also really dressing up my meals for super cheap.My friends have wondered just how I do it.:DI dare say, this is almost more useful than my canner, since I can save a garden harvest of any size, and still make use of them in jams, jellies, sauces, and meals...This product is a must have!

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased a Nesco Food dehydrator and got these fruit roll-up sheet too.They are wonderful to dry fruits for delicious fruit roll ups.We had some apples and cranberries frozen from our recent harvest and this combination made a really good snack, my whole family loves them.We also tried plums which turned out very tasty and tart which is also a nice change.These sheets will quickly pay for themselves as we are using them frequently!The directions say you should spray the sheet before putting your fruit on to dry, well I did spray two and forgot to spray two, and all came off of the tray quickly and easily.

However, when I ordered more sheets, they came simply thrown/stuffed in a box, and each had suffered creases that damaged the surface. I returned these with a note regarding the poor packing, and later ordered five more sheets. Unfortunately, these sheets also arrived unprotected and creased, basically just thrown into a box. I do not recommend purchasing an otherwise good product from this vendor until they improve their shipping methods.

(More customer reviews)I had been looking at food dehydrators for 2 months, trying to make my decision, which was hard, as this one had no reviews and I count on the customer reviews to help me decide on whether or not something is a good buy.It is hard to spend this much money on something and not know what you all think about it.But...I really wanted a square one, with a rear fan, and a 10 tray one, but the Excaliber was so expensive, and the reviews were iffy in the sound area and in the temperature control area. (I actually bought this from E-Bay, (better price and freebies too) and they have reviews, but I don't know if I can count on their review system like I can Amazon's.)Anyway, I took the plung and bought this beauty, I think that the smaller size of the holes in the trays were what made the decision for me, along with the $100+ difference in the price, and the free silicone liner sheets.It is quiet, efficient, and I just love it.It came with 3 free silicone liner sheets for fruit leather that I would have had to pay extra for with the Excalibur and the Nesco, and it came with a face plate filler so that I can pull out 4 trays and make yoghurt in it if I want to.

I have dried bananas, strawberries and oranges so far with great results.I was surprised that the oranges were so good, never expected to like them, just did not want them to go bad, so I sliced them in whole circles and put them on the trays. They were crispy/chewy and sweet, and I will save the rinds and chop them in my blender to use later for recipes that call for orange zest. I made Essiene bread this last week, using sprouted wheat, raisins, and sunflower seeds.It was very fast and with the openings of the trays about 1/2 inch, I put the patties right on the trays, no liner, and it was fine, no chunks falling through.I love the separate temperature control, it is nice.So far, 2 months later, I have no complaints except my family is eating the dried fruit as fast as I have time to make it, and I was hoping to store some of it.My granddaughter has a sweet tooth, and she has her chubby little hands full of the bananas when she is here.I would have loved to put some of the dried strawberries in my Mueseli, but they disappeared before I could sneak some away.I am ready for summer to come (we are still having snow storms...) and for my garden to produce so that I can really put it to good use.I will try jerky soon, but I have no doubt that it will do the job well.I wanted to wait and write this review until I was sure it would work well for all of my needs, and I am confident to recommend this to anyone who is wanting a good dehydrator for a good price.It is bigger than the Nesco, smaller than the Excaliber, at 10 square feet of drying space, it more than meets my needs.It is just the right size for my counter, not too big, sits next to the microwave.It makes less noise by far than my dishwasher or my stove hood fan.I know it is on, but I can still think and hear what everyone is saying.The kitchen smells wonderful while it is running as well, like whatever I am drying.I expect to be able to take advantage of sales, Costco sized packages, and my garden offerings this year, without worrying about spoilage, plus save a little money, eat a little better.Not a bad life...grin...

Customer service was amazing.I received it within 3 days of ordering it, if you can believe that.I actually had a problem with the unit.It was explained to me that sometimes when the unit is drop shipped through UPS, they actually drop it, and the protective grill around the fan can get shifted.Well mine did, and it had the fan blade trapped.I turned on the unit and washed the trays off for my first use, but the fan blade was not turning and it melted.Oh man, I had the trays full of sliced bananas and no dehydrator!Bummer, plus my husband had already thrown the box away so how could I even send it back?I did not want to send it back, I just wanted it to work!I took it apart and could see where the problem was, this was a Saturday and their office was closed, so I E-mailed the company, Mercantile Station 2, asking them to send me a replacement fan blade.Within 30 minutes I had a personal phone call (again, this is Saturday and they are closed) and a promise to ship me a new fan blade the following Monday.He explained to me that about 1 in 80 customers had had this problem, (leave it to me to be the 1 in 80...) and that they were looking into their packaging to fix the problem.Meanwhile he could not have been nicer, or more accommodating, and he was very grateful that I was willing to fix the problem myself.Me too, I did not want to have to wait for an exchange, I just wanted to get it working, and it does, and I am one happy dehydrating woman!(So check that your fan blade is free of impingement before you turn your unit on, which is easy, just take out the trays and you can see all the inner workings.)FEEL CONFIDENT to purchase this unit and save a good $100+ over the other comparable units on the market.

(More customer reviews)Be warned with 12 sq ft of drying space this is a sizeable counter top addition, I dislike that you cannot just turn it on and let it run, you have to set the timer for it to start running, but that is a nice safety feature (I can be forgetful)

I have finally given it a break since I got it set up, and I have made some grawnola, bananas, apples, flax crackers, and a few other dried veggies for snacks and it has done an amazing job.

I am sure someone will get one with a bad motor, or danaged tray at some point and give it bad reviews, but I personally enjoy it and think it was a wise investment.

(More customer reviews)Nice unit, smartly designed and easy to use. I'm primarily making beef jerky, and trying different recipes is a lot of fun. I got unit for Christmas and have made 5 batches of jerky. Loved doing it and the jerky was I have to admit is very good.

That last batch of jerky was where my problem started, about an hour before the jerky was finished the dehydrator started completely losing power. Fan would shut off, the LEDs went off, but a rap on the side would get it to run for a while. I had to do this a couple of times got that batch of jerky finished.

I called Kitchen Resources (the number on the enclosed warranty information) and told them what was happening. They told me they would send me a new base (it was all I needed the rest is trays, lid, etc., no moving parts). Well a few days later a whole new units shows up, I swapped out the base units, (I really fought the urge to take additional trays). Retaped the box, used the supplied prepaid UPS shipping label and sent it back.

(More customer reviews)My mother has these and I used to make lots of fruit rolls with them - lots of fun, and a good treat!I recommend mixing applesauce with (thawed) frozen fruit juice concentrate of your choice to make whatever flavor you like.My favorite was mixing grape fruit juice concentrate with the applesauce.It makes a very deep purple and fruity treat.(Ratio was one can frozen concentrate to a big jar of applesauce.I'll edit my post and add specific sizes soon.)

(More customer reviews)If you do a Google search, which I should have done up front, you will see that the temperature control on these units is awful.

I have to crank mine up all the way to 145F to get the internal temp up to 100F (not even warm enough to dry without spoiling.)

Older Excaliber units were very good. As is the case with so many companies today, manufacturing has gone down hill. Fewer and fewer new purchasers are pleased with this product. I wish I had kept my shipping material. Lesson learned.
